About
I’m David Hawisher, a North Carolina appellate and healthcare lawyer. This blog is my personal project. I started it because my interests ran in that direction and not as a business‐development move, so in general you should expect content to be eclectic, updates to be inconsistent, and tone to be informal.
I chose the name “Tar Heel Appeals” because it’s catchy and the domain name was available, but the actual scope is a bit broader:
About 50% appeals. This includes recent NC appellate decisions and discussion of interesting appellate-procedure issues.
About 30% general law content—legal writing, doctrinal questions, etc.
About 20% technology for lawyers. (Not legal technology—think “how to make a table of authorities more easily,” not “how generative AI can turbocharge your ediscovery workflow.”)
That last category probably is not what you are here for, but it is the best reason to subscribe. I have spent a fair bit of time solving arcane Microsoft Word issues, a lot of time creating attractive and rules-compliant Word templates, and even more time writing VBA scripts and open-source tools for legal research and writing. I will use this blog to share all of that work for free.
